The town is an hour's drive from the Kruger National Park and on the circular Panorama route that winds through the forests and mountain of the Drakensberg escarpment and offers some spectacular views over the Lowveld. On Route you'll encounter the 80m Berlin falls, the triple drop of the Lisbon Falls and Gods Window which offers a magnificent view over the Lowveld, the Pinnacle and Driekop Gorge.

Bridal Veil Falls

Along Mpumalanga’s scenic Panorama Route, which is known for the forestry industry and its many breath-taking waterfalls, lies the particularly pretty Bridal Veil Falls. This part of South Africa is green and verdant, with natural attractions that rival some of the finest in the country, thanks to their diversity and the abundance of fauna and flora.

Mac Mac Falls

You will find the waterfall roughly 13km outside of Sabie on R532 on both the Sabie Waterfalls Route and the Escarpment Route. A viewing platform, which allows really good views of the falls, is a little restricted by a wire safety mesh but you should just get your camera lens through the holes, depending on the camera.

Lisbon Falls

The Lisbon Falls are situated in the heart of the waterfall area of Mpumalanga, where the number of these dramatic falls exceeds that of anywhere else in southern Africa. Lisbon Falls is 94 metres, or 308 feet, high, which makes it one of the highest in the province.

Situated on the Drakensberg escarpment in Mpumalanga is God’s Window. Just one look down and you will begin to understand why it is called "God's Window".

So we've gathered some information regarding historical sites near Graskop so you know where to go for a historical experience!

Pilgrims Rest

Pilgrims Rest is one of the most well-known towns in Southern Africa. This town is held so precious by South Africans, that it has been named a "museum town" and is protected as a provincial heritage site.

This town is about 30 minutes drive from Graskop. Therefore, it is an ideal day-trip when vacationing in Graskop. This is yet another town born out of the South African gold rush era, and by 1873 there were 1500 inhabitants mining for gold all over the Pilgrims Rest area.

the site was named a national heritage site 1986, and the architecture remains the same as way back when the gold rush started. The whole town and all the buildings in it has a distinct "old-time" feel.

Some of the attractions in Pilgrims rest is The Vine Restaurant and Pub, a local favorite! And of course the graveyard, with one grave facing in the opposite direction as all the others, locally known as "The Robbers Grave".

Furthermore, the town boasts with a golf course, gold panning and some ghost tours all around Pilgrims Rest. Definitely a place worth visiting while in Graskop!

Jock's Memorial

"Jock - Staffordshire bull-terrier - was born in the present day Kruger National Park near the Pretorius Kop Camp. He was the runt of the litter and the young Fitzpatrick saved him from certain death by adopting him as a pup. Percy Fitzpatrick became a transport rider - carting supplies for the goldfields at Pilgrim's Rest and Barberton from Delagoa Bay (now Maputo) in Lourenco Marques (now Mozambique).

Jock grew up to be a faithful and obedient companion, as well as a champion fighter and hunter. Jock accompanied Fitzpatrick on his journeys through the KNP, as well as through the towns of Sabie, Graskop, Pilgrim's Rest, Baberton and Lydenburg.

In 1983 the Lowveld Digger's and Transport Rider's Society erected these bronze plagues on rocks wherever Jock's original route crossed the present day roads." - Path Finder

The story of Jock has spread far and wide, and has even been transcribed into movies! The latest one was an animated film, released in 2010.

It starts getting good on The Longtom Pass, between Nelspruit and Sabie, on this windy road you get views of the whole Sabie Valley. On a clear day, you can see the whole Sabie, and the mountains surrounding it.

4. The Wildlife

If you're from the city, you will definitely enjoy the wildlife attractions that the Panorama Route has to offer.

All along the route, you will see Bucks, Baboons and all sorts of birds. Additionally, the Kruger National Park is less than an hour's drive from Graskop. That means you can see the big 5 in all it's glory up close and personal.

Furthermore, there are various Animal Rehabilitation sits spread all over the panorama route. One of them includes the Maholoholo rehab center where they take injured animals, nurse them back to health and release them back into the wild.

Top 3 Mpumalanga Day Hiking Trails: A hikers heaven

Mpumalanga is filled with greenery, scenery, and wildlife. But some of us want to take it further than just sipping a glass of wine while taking in the view. Some of us want to explore and be apart of nature. And we call ourselves walkers and hikers.

Graskop and the Panorama route has so many hidden gems for hikers, that we decided to dedicate a whole post to round up the best of the best.

So here we go:

Jock of the Bushveld / Fairyland Trail

If you're looking for some interesting, one of a kind landmarks this needs to be at the top of your "To Hike" list.

About 1km south-east of Graskop town there is giant rock formations with very distinctive shapes and names. These rocks have been there for thousands of years. They are remarkable, to say the least.

To view these natural sculptures, you can go on the 3-hour circular trail. It starts and ends at the Graskop holiday resort.

On route, you will get to see some amazing sites. You will walk through grasslands to the edge of the pinnacle gorge for a spectacular view. Thereafter you will also get to see Sir Percy Fitzpatrick's overnight camp ("Paradise Camp") as well as "Fairyland" with it's oddly shaped rock formations as mentioned above.

What you need to know before delving into the Jock of the Bushveld / Fairyland Trail:

Take refreshments
Take sunblock (Most of the trail is walked with little to no shade, so be prepared to reapply that sunblock once or twice!)
Free of charge.
8km hiking trail

Belvedere Day Walk

Another p circular hiking trail in the Graskop area is the belvedere day walk. This day walk might not be up there with the most popular, but definitely one of the most rewarding hikes in the area

This is a reasonably strenuous walk but beyond worth it. It gives you amazing views of the Blyde river canyon while descending 400m below the Bourke's Luck Potholes.

"The now-defunct Belevedere hydro-electric power station is 400m below the Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Built in 1911, it was once the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere." - Best Hike

While the trail might be a bit rough, the views are spectacular and well worth the effort.

What you need to know before going on the Belvedere Day Walk:

Hikers must be registered and start the trail before 1 pm at Bourke's Luck
R55 per person entrance
R55 Trail Fee (Please call in advance to confirm 013 769 8926)
Sunblock
Water and/or refreshments
10km hiking trail one way (20km in total)

Graskop Day Trail / Forest Falls Trail

If you are out and about looking for a more relaxing trail that won't be too strenuous but still rewarding, we highly recommend the Graskop Day Trail / Forest Falls Trail.

This amazing walk starts off at the Graskop Hut and ends at the amazing Forest Falls. While on this 13.3km hike you will walk through pine forests, over the Mac Mac concrete bridge and at last enter the indigenous forests where you'll find the Forest Falls.

These falls are far wider than they are high, and offer the perfect swimming spot to cool off after a hike!

What you need to know before going on the Graskop Day Trail / Forest Falls Trail:

Bring swimming clothes!
The raining season can make many of the paths slippery and muddy. Bring appropriate hiking shoes.
You need to obtain a permit from the Graskop Information Bureau at R20.00 p/p. You will also be required to sign an indemnity form

There many other Trails to choose from like the Loerie Trail, the Fanie Botha trail, and Bluderivierspoort trail. But most of these are hikes that require three to five days.

But if you're looking for a day-trip trail these three should be at the top of your list. They might not be well-known but they are definitely worth the visit because of the spectacular views, flora and fauna available on the panorama route.

We have so many that it was difficult to choose a few when compiling a list. But here we go:

God's Window

If you've never been to God's Window it is difficult to understand where this destination got its name from. However, when you are done with your short hike, and you are at one of the viewing points, you fully grasp the name of this spectacular viewpoint near Graskop.

God's Window offers you a glimpse of the Blye River Nature Reserve, or maybe a bit more than a glimpse, as it seems that the view is endless! There are various viewing points where you can take hikes to, each one with a unique perspective on the lush indigenous forest clad ravine, cliffs and waterfalls.

This is one of the spots you'll never forget seeing.

If you are up for a hike, a steep climb and a stroll through the forest, you can break away from the crowd and make your way to one of the most beautiful points at God's Window.

Bourke's Luck Potholes

If you are looking to be mesmerized by natural beauty, or take your kids on an adventure, Bourke's Luck Potholes is the place to go!

Bourke's Luck is one of Mpumalanga (And Graskop's) tourism gems. This unique location is set perfectly where the Treur River meets the Blyde River. These rivers have eroded the stone into swirling delights. There are large (and small) round holes formed by erosion and the water flows freely from one hole to the other.

It might not sound magnificent, but it truly is as can be seen below:

Furthermore, because this is such a huge tourist attraction, there are walkways and bridges everywhere for tourist to freely wander about and explore these natural formations.

Three Rondavels (Die Drie Rondavels)

Rondavel is a traditional circular African dwelling with a conical thatched roof.

The three rondavels are iconic to the panorama route and Graskop. They are perfectly situated along the Blyde River Canyon (Which in itself is a wonder on its own). These three mountants are named after rondavels because of the striking similarity in shape.

Mpumalanga Attractions: Top 6 waterfalls in Graskop area you need to visit

When you make your way to your Graskop accommodation for some Mpumalanga attractions, you will notice how the scenery, plant life and air change around you. Whether you are traveling from Gauteng and the brick walls turn into grasslands and eventually a waterfall of green leaves. Or if you're coming from another country making your way through Southern Africa.

These green rolling mountains and fresh air have so much to offer each and every person. If you're a waterfall lover, this post is going to blow your mind!

Without further ado, let's get into it: The five waterfalls in Graskop area that you need to include in your travel plan when making your Graskop Accommodation Booking.

1. Berlin Falls

Berlin falls is situated close to God's Window. This mesmerizing waterfall got its name from European miners that named the falls in the area after their hometowns.

These falls are ideally located so you can pop by while on route to places like Potluck Boskombuis or Bourke's Luck Potholes.

Many people have noticed that the cascading water forms a candle-like shape. With the short and narrow stream of water forms the wick, while the broader cascade of water looks like the candle's body.

2. Lisbon Falls

3. Mac Mac Falls

Mac Mac falls is just one of those places you HAVE to visit in Mpumalanga. This waterfall is situated between Graskop and Sabie. Therefore, if you're making a day-trip to Sabie, this is the perfect place to stop for some sightseeing.

Mac Mac Falls greets you with a vibrant African market where there are many arts and crafts on sale. Thereafter you go on a short walk to get to the waterfall viewing platform.

4. Forest Falls

This is Mpumalanga's best-hidden gem. Some people have tried finding it, with no luck. It is situated between Graskop and Sabie and takes you on a walk through the forest before laying our eyes on it.

And it is so worth it!

The walking trip is approximately 7km long, and you can leave your car at a picnic spot (cars are not allowed to drive in the forests). Feel refreshed by the crisp air and wind in your hair on this beautiful nature walk on your way to Forest Falls!

5. Panorama Gorge Falls

This magnificent waterfall is ideally situated in Graskop. It is one of those places you'll never forget going to/

An added bonus, of course, is that there are few entertainment areas surrounding The Panorama Gorge Falls to keep the whole family busy. A fairly recent development called The Graskop Gorge Lift Company. This development allows for a peaceful day out with various shops, craft markets, and a restaurant!

The best of all: You get to view this amazing waterfall from an amazing venue.

6. Maria Shires Falls

Maria Shires Falls are right between Graskop and Sabie. There is a lovely picnic spot right across from the entrance

This is the perfect spot to take the family out for a picnic day, short hike and exploring! Finding the waterfall is relatively easy as there is a marked path leading to the beautiful waterfall.

If you are looking for some more adventure, you can go looking for Maria Shires' family graves at the top of the waterfall.

While there are many things we can say, we will simply start with this:
Both Summerfields Kitchen and River Café were winners in the prestigious 2016 World Luxury Restaurant Awards

3. Go Geckoing – White Water Tubing

If you’re not one for heights, that’s okay. We’ve got you sorted. Geckoing is one of Mpumalanga’s favourite extreme sports! This particular route involves you, a tube and a crazy Sabie River.

Test your limits with the raging rapids of the Sabie River. Some routes even have 8m cliff jump (optional)

But one thing is for sure, this will get your heart racing!
